Some laptops have different indicators for charging and power as well.
It can also tell that the battery is charging or that it is fully charged. The power indicator is good for telling, at a glance, that the computer is on if the screen is off. (Actually I lied, it does have a light in the Magsafe connector that glows yellow/green for charging/charged).
